Duan festival is an annual occasion for Shui people to ring the old year out and the new year in, on which people celebrate the harvest and worship their ancestors. “Duan” refers to the beginning and the end of a year. According to the lunar calendar of Shui, the ninth month is the beginning of a year and the eighth month is the end (Except for this, the Shui lunar calendar is the same as traditional Chinese lunar calendar). “Duan” marks the time when crops ripen. Horse race of Shui Minority is only held at this time and it is the most attractive event in Duan festival.
